What is TAIF?

TAIF Learning Lab is a collaborative classroom activity platform for higher education. Students interpret evidence, discuss plausible alternatives, commit to a team decision, reveal immediate feedback, and learn through reconsideration and explanation.

Can I try it without an account?

Yes. The public demo presents one short evidence-based decision in about two minutes. It does not require a class code or save anything to a real activity.

Try TAIF
How do instructors get access?

TAIF Free includes one permanent class for the lifetime of your workspace, up to 500 distinct learners over the class’s lifetime, unlimited roster-based individual and team activities, and one additional instructor.

Every Free participant must match the class roster. Removing a learner does not restore a place; re-importing the same learner does not count again. Open participation and label-based Privacy mode require Instructor. Instructor keeps the limit of 500 currently rostered learners per class.

Student help

Join and complete an activity.

Which code should I enter?

Open taiflab.org/join to reach the activity code form.

Check the activity name shown after entering a code, especially if your class has several live activities. For a single-student activity, each student uses the activity code to register themselves and receives a personal recovery code. For a team activity, the chosen team leader uses the activity code to create a team. Students joining a team that already exists use the team code shared by the leader or instructor. For a pre-assigned team’s first device, a present representative enters the supplied team code and their own roster number, then reviews attendance. The number is carried forward read-only. Later devices, rejoining and recovery require one teammate’s number as well. Individual and private-label activities never ask for a teammate’s number.

Which activity does a shared team code open?

A class team code considers only live activities. If one is live, it opens that activity. If several are live, choose the one your instructor is running. Draft, paused, closed and finalised activities are excluded. If none is live, TAIF says No live activity is available for that code; ask your instructor to start or resume one.

How do I create a team for the first time?

One team leader enters the activity code and their own student number, then chooses Continue or Create a new team. Choose I’m the team leader, add every present teammate, leave extra empty places blank, check the identifiers and confirm participation before creating the team. An unknown number shows a validation error so it can be corrected.

Use Not used only for an empty optional place. Confirm the numbered place before its details are cleared; Cancel keeps them. Use place turns that numbered place back on so you can enter a student’s details. Team activities need at least two learners.

Why does my activity say paused or ended?

Pause temporarily stops progress until your instructor resumes it. End activity shows This activity has ended and preserves recorded work for review. If the tab was suspended in the background, return to it to refresh its status. Ending an activity does not finalise marks.

What happens when an answer is revealed?

Using the reveal gesture or choosing Commit & reveal answer commits the selected answer and gives immediate correct or incorrect feedback. If another attempt remains, reconsider independently in a single-student activity or discuss with your team before retrying. Later correct attempts may earn fewer marks under the instructor’s scoring settings. In a marked single-student activity, you receive your own mark. Unmarked practice awards no grade.

Questions have two to six options and allow one reveal per available choice. The fourth scoring value applies to fourth and later attempts. A correct zero-mark answer still completes the question.

Read the scoring reference: all four attempt values, totals and retry rules →

How do multiple devices and Think First work?

Verified members can follow the activity on their own devices. One device controls the shared answer. Use Take team control to transfer that role; the previous device can keep following.

Think First waits until the present members have connected, or the answering device confirms everyone here is ready. Each member selects a private multiple-choice answer. Discussion happens outside TAIF; no written explanation is required.

Can I keep or reopen my results?

Choose Download my results to save a summary. Activity-specific rejoin codes reopen recorded work with the required student-number verification. Shared class-team codes open live activities only, so save your summary before leaving. Private labels use the same private code without learner identities. Completed answers remain locked.

What if the connection drops?

TAIF keeps your progress on the server and reconnects an already open activity after a temporary connection loss. Reloading an active activity in the same tab restores it after server verification. Opening a fresh page starts at Student entry. For an existing team, enter the activity or team code, your own student number and one teammate’s student number. Rejoining as the same student replaces that student’s earlier device. Other verified members can keep following in a multi-device activity; only the controlling device saves shared answers or advances questions. A shared browser never automatically opens a previous student’s activity.

A one-person activity needs the activity or personal recovery code and only your own number. Privacy mode uses its assigned private code without student numbers. If checks fail too often, wait for the displayed countdown. Ask your instructor to find your team if you need the code.

Instructor help

Prepare, run, and review a session.

What is the basic workflow?

Create a class, add or import students when a roster is needed, review the class defaults, create an activity, prepare questions and participation, preview the session, then launch it. Run mode helps you monitor and recover the live room before you close and review results.

How do I import or move students?

Open Manage class → Roster to add a student, open a CSV or TSV file, or paste a register. For separate name columns, choose Student name format → First name + surname, map both columns and check the combined name in the preview. Check the other column mappings, and correct the row-numbered errors, or explicitly skip invalid student rows before importing. Populated unmapped columns must be mapped or deliberately ignored; prior_grade is recognised as Prior result. Reimports preserve matching identities, students omitted from the file and past activity records.

The expected team size chosen during import is saved for roster checks and Formation lab. Change it under Manage class → Settings → Default class team size; this does not move students or change existing activities. Roster, Teams, Instructors and Settings stay visible while you manage the class.

On Teams, choose Merge beside a short team, select a destination and confirm the combined student count. The source team is archived and its students move together. Choose Rebalance teams to redistribute the whole roster through Formation lab. Finish or close activities with assigned teams first. Both actions preserve past activity membership, answers and marks; an uneven roster can still leave smaller teams.

Use a student’s Team selector to move them or leave them Unassigned without retyping their ID. Removing a member in the team editor also keeps them on the class register. Remove from class is a separate confirmed action. Class team changes apply to future activities; use an activity’s Review controls for a live move. In the team panel, destination changes and confirmed removals apply when you save. Blank grades are placed by team size after graded students; they are not treated as zero.

Choose Marked or Unmarked practice in an activity’s Setup → Activity scoring before anyone answers. Unmarked practice records feedback and attempts without a grade; its exports leave mark fields blank. Review offers Export question results and Export attempt history as well as totals. Optional individual reflections are available after completion, and live information refreshes every two seconds.

How do I hand out team codes?

Use Manage class → Teams → Hand out team codes for the class list, or the activity’s Prepare · Participation tab for assigned teams. Copy the list, download a CSV or print individual slips. These contain team names, codes and the student page, with student names and identifiers omitted.

Privacy mode has Hand out private codes for its labels; share each code only with its intended team. Student-formed teams and single-student activities begin with the activity code shown in the activity.

How do I find a student’s team and rejoin code?

Students enter the activity code and their student number, then one teammate’s student number. Rejoining as the same student replaces their earlier device; other verified members can keep following in a multi-device activity. In the live panel, type or paste a full student number into the search box; lookup runs while you type when your role permits it. Inspection shows device changes and an optional action to end a device’s session for disputes. Privacy mode uses its private code.

How do I check live progress and recorded answers?

Run mode monitors live teams. Review provides recorded results and exports separately. When all student sessions or labels have completed, the summary says all completed; the activity stays Live until you pause or end it. The panel shows Loading live session until fresh counts arrive. Click a category to filter, open and scroll to its teams. If a Pause reply is delayed or lost, TAIF checks whether the activity was paused and can retry once. Wait for the confirmed Paused state; refresh the class if it cannot be confirmed. Awaiting answer does not confirm team agreement. A shared team needs only one answering device; attendance and progress are separate from connection counts.

Choose Completed → Inspect team for recorded question history and answer sequences. Question diagnostics includes all recorded answers by default; its completed-only option shows finishers, who may not represent the whole class. Marked results remain provisional until finalised.

What does Need attention count?

Each affected team counts once for connection or controller problems, a pause, an unresolved team incident, or three or more device changes. At the third change the team shows Device changed 3× and Review session events. These are prompts to check in, not penalties. Failed joins from unknown student numbers remain separate notices and do not increase Home’s team attention count.

Which activity type should I choose?

Choose Team quiz (assigned teams), Students form teams, Individual, Practice (unmarked), or Private labels when creating an activity. Advanced uses your class defaults. Presets set participation and scoring; adjust the individual activity in Setup before anyone participates. Private labels require Instructor or agreed access.

Can I import questions or change the number of options?

In Prepare · Questions, use Number of options in the question editor to choose two to six choices. Select the correct answer explicitly; no answer is selected by default. Reducing the count clears the key if the correct option is removed.

Choose Import questions for the CSV template, file upload and editable preview. Imports can mix option counts; leave unused trailing choices empty and provide a correct answer for each row. Correct all row errors before importing. Existing questions are kept, and questions lock after the first recorded attempt or finalisation.

Can I run a single-student activity?

Choose Individual in the activity type picker when creating the activity. It sets up one student per activity automatically. As an alternative, in an existing activity’s participation setup, choose Students form their own teams and set Maximum students per team to 1. Understood keeps one; Cancel or Escape resets the maximum to 2. Save team setup, then start the activity and share its activity code. Each student joins separately. Marked activities give each student their own mark; unmarked practice awards no grade. Team discussion, multi-device team participation and Think first are off. An optional experience and learning reflection appears after completion.

You can also set a class default of 1 under Student self-enrolment. Save the class defaults to apply this to future activities; existing activities retain their settings.

Single-student activities are an independent adaptation. The original team-based study does not establish learning outcomes for this mode. An individual mark records the submitted answers; it does not, by itself, verify identity, independent authorship or invigilated conditions.

Can I run TAIF without a roster?

With Instructor, enable open participation with student self-enrolment when students should join without an imported roster, either individually or in teams. TAIF marks students it cannot match as Unmatched / not on roster. In the live room or Review, use the Unmatched / not on roster filter. Exports identify them in the Roster Status column. For a roster match, the entry confirmation explains that the roster name will be used. After joining, the activity shows Joined as with that name.

Where are paused activities, and how do I resume one?

Open Prepare & run and find the Paused section. Resume activity opens the activity’s participation setup. Review the activity, then choose Resume live session and confirm Resume activity to reopen student access.

What do the two Duplicate choices copy?

Duplicate (questions only) copies questions and activity settings into a new draft with no team assignments or private labels. Duplicate with teams also carries over assigned class teams or private labels. Neither choice copies answers, marks or student sessions.

What happens when I close or reopen an activity?

Close activity asks for confirmation before ending student access. Answers and provisional marks are preserved. Before finalisation, Reopen as draft makes the activity editable again; student access remains closed until you start it. Finalisation locks the marks.

Where can I learn about the evidence behind TAIF?

The About & Research page explains the original team-based study and how the paper-based approach informs the digital platform. Single-student activities are an optional adaptation; team-based findings should not be taken as evidence of their learning outcomes.
