Scoring reference · 17 October 2026

Make every attempt’s value clear.

Choose the marks available for a correct answer on each attempt, then explain how the result will be used before the activity begins.

Four values

Set marks by attempt for the activity.

Where do I set the values?

Open the activity’s Setup tab and find TAIF scoring → Marks by attempt. Course Owners and Co-instructors can edit these values. The same four values apply to every question in that activity; they are not separate question weights.

The default is 6 / 4 / 2 / 0. The 4 / 2 / 1 / 0 tutorial is an example configuration; enter those values yourself when you want that schedule. The public demo uses 6 / 4 / 2 / 0.

Which values can I choose?

Enter non-negative whole numbers in the four fields. Each value is editable, including the value for fourth and later attempts. Equal values and zero values can be used; the settings do not require a decreasing schedule.

For reduced-credit retries, choose values that stay the same or decrease from the first attempt. Keep the first-attempt value greater than zero if you want a meaningful percentage, and at least as large as later values because it defines the maximum mark.

Save the changes in Setup and check the activity in Preview. Preview attempts and marks do not change live results.

When do scoring settings lock?

The four values lock after the first recorded attempt anywhere in the activity. Selecting an answer alone does not trigger this lock. Finalised activities are also locked. Agree and save the schedule before participants begin revealing answers.

No marks

Choose Unmarked practice.

How do I run practice without a grade?

Before the first answer, open Setup → Activity scoring, select Unmarked practice, and save. Feedback, retries, completion, optional reflections, question results and attempt-history exports remain available.

Students see no points, mark or percentage. Every practice export leaves mark, maximum and percentage fields blank, including authorised student and class gradebook exports. Practice cannot appear as a zero grade. The scoring mode locks after the first recorded answer.

One scoring mechanism

Marks, points and feedback points.

Do these terms mean different kinds of scoring?

Score is the recorded total. Marks and points describe its numeric units. Feedback points is the wording used in an ungraded classroom example, where the educator uses the score to guide learning rather than contribute to the course grade.

All use the same attempt-based calculation. Graded or ungraded use is an assessment-design decision: the educator tells participants whether the score counts, its course weighting and how it will be transferred into institutional results. Choosing an example does not automatically set a course weighting.

The ungraded check uses 6 / 4 / 2 / 0 feedback points; the graded example uses the same values as marks. The tutorial uses 4 / 2 / 1 / 0 marks.

Commit once

Reveal an answer, review feedback, then retry.

What counts as an attempt?

Selecting an answer is tentative: you can change it and it uses no attempt. Revealing commits the selected answer and records an attempt. Drag across its silver panel or use the reveal button; both use the same scoring.

The gesture commits when a deliberate drag begins, before the cover is fully removed. The button commits when you activate it. Continuing the gesture or removing more of the cover does not create extra attempts.

Reveal selected answer or Commit & reveal answer submits your activity answer. Reveal teaching answer on a classroom example opens a teaching explanation and does not submit an activity attempt.

How are retries scored?

An incorrect attempt earns zero and shows incorrect feedback without identifying the correct answer. Reconsider and select a different option. Each question has two to six answer options and allows up to one distinct attempt per option; an option already attempted cannot be submitted again.

A correct answer earns the configured value for its attempt number and completes the question, even when that value is zero. The fourth value applies to the fourth and any later attempt. With 6 / 4 / 2 / 0, incorrect → incorrect → correct earns 2 marks. It does not earn 6 + 4 + 2. With 4 / 2 / 1 / 0, incorrect → correct earns 2 marks.

A completed question is read-only. Immediate correctness feedback is separate from an optional lecturer-authored explanation, which appears after question completion when enabled.

Activity calculation

Add earned marks across questions.

How are totals and percentages calculated?

The raw total adds the marks awarded across the activity’s questions. Incorrect attempts add zero; unanswered questions add no earned marks.

Maximum mark = number of questions × first-attempt value. Five questions using 6 / 4 / 2 / 0 have a maximum of 30. An earned total of 24 is 80%.

Percentage = raw total ÷ maximum mark × 100. Student displays round to whole percentages; CSV exports use one decimal place. Unmarked practice displays no mark or percentage and leaves mark fields blank in every export. Use its recorded answer and attempt paths as learning evidence.

Closing an activity and finalising its results are separate steps. Review incomplete work and attendance before using results in an official gradebook.

Who receives the result?

Use results for the selected participation mode.

Team, single-student and Privacy mode results

Team activity: the team shares one recorded answer path. In student exports, members confirmed present receive the team mark; absent or unconfirmed attendance has blank mark fields. Check unmatched identifiers before treating results as official.

Single-student activity: each participant answers independently and receives their own mark using the same retry calculation. Review uses student wording and individual CSVs use Student Raw Mark. This result does not itself verify independent authorship or invigilated conditions.

Privacy mode: TAIF records one result per instructor-prepared label. Export label results and allocate any marks locally using the membership and attendance records kept outside TAIF. Privacy activities are excluded from the class student gradebook export.

Think First: private initial choices are preparation for team discussion. They do not earn separate marks or use a reveal attempt; a missing private response does not change team marks.
